Amethyst has a rhombohedral crystal system and has a hardness rate of 7.0 mohs. The prime hues of amethyst go from light pinkish violet to a deep purple. Amethyst may have one or two secondary hues that are red and blue. The best variety of amethyst in relation to quality, is called "Deep Siberian", and has a primary purple hue of near 80% with a 20% of blue. Green quartz is sometimes incorrectly called green amethyst, but the proper name for it is prasiolite.
